Introduction

Hello and welcome to the BookKrasher App! Don't let the name fool you; we're all about making language learning less of a slog and more of a smooth journey.

In the interest of full disclosure:
This app was made by two guys who really needed to learn Chinese fast and were having real trouble finding the motivation to do so. Our selfish and lazy desires have made this app and we think that has made it a little niche compared to other Apps out there. It works really well for people who love reading (and don't mind reading on a tablet or phone). It seems to work well for people who spend a lot of time reading online (fan fiction and Web novels). It is not as polished as most Apple Apps. This isn't instagram, folks. We are not a giant company focusing on User Experience.

Nevertheless, we did want to put it on the Appstore and google Play because we think that even though it is very Niche, there will be people out there who it fits the way it fit us.

About Krasher

Krasher isn't just a reading app with a dictionary; it's a solution to the most tedious parts of learning a language.

The average adult knows between 20,000 to 35,000 words in English. For Chinese? The numbers are daunting, but we're here to help you climb this linguistic mountain.

BookKrasher's approach is different. Much of learning your native language has simply been a byproduct of being engaged in a task, following a story or simply living life. That's great, because even though you learned words quickly that way, you weren't actually trying to remember anything. Most don't know this, but this is natural. It takes the pressure off, allowing you to spend extended time getting exposed to the target language. It allowed your brain to simply take in new words with context and purpose.

Focused practice (active repetition and textbook exercises) are not useless, of course. But trying to use focused practice to replace all of that subconscious work, however, well... it's not the same is it?

Krasher helps put you back into that natural state of language learning, albeit in quite a novel way (pardon the pun). Our app gradually translates your English book into Chinese while you read, introducing new words in a manageable, intuitive way. And while we use the word gradual, we in no way mean slow. You'd be surprised at the amount of words you can learn in a day and remember simply by reading a story you enjoy!

How Krasher Works

Guided by the Krashen input hypothesis (of the linguist and hero Stephen Krashen), BookKrasher takes your chosen text and identifies translatable words that are are eligible for accurate translation (based on polysemy, frequency in the english corpus and more). You control which words to learn, and the app translates them in your personal vocabulary file. With a simple tap, you can access meanings and pronunciations. Not happy with a translation? You can always revert to the original. The key is, you're in control. And you're being exposed to new vocabulary in a meaningful way that forces you to process it and place it in context. If the word fits, you'll remember it. If it doesn't fit, you discard it guess what.... You will likely STILL remember it! Processing the word is what makes our brains actually keep hold of it.

BookKrasher ensures that you're not overwhelmed or demotivated and you're learning in a way where most of the context is understood, and new words are absorbed without resistance.

Beyond Vocabulary: Fluency, Pronunciation, and Grammar

People often ask. Well what about all the other aspects of language? Will Krasher help teach me a language fully? What about grammar? What about speaking?

The answer: BookKrasher gets the words in.

As we said, it deals with the truly tedious parts. You, of course, must use them to learn how to speak a language. But think of it this way: With a robust vocabulary base, you can actually save brainpower for speaking practice, grammar learning, pronunciation and actual usage. Think of all the times you were practicing a sentence pattern just to get derailed because you lost a word in the middle. If you can't imagine the peace and confidence that comes with that, then take it from us. It's stellar.
